PHILADELPHIA, PA – Opinion // May 24, 2009 – The media has been doing stories about Memorial Day that truly have nothing to do with Memorial Day. They are relating this day with the actions currently going on overseas and of course, bringing-up events that should have a rest, for at least one day, to show respect for whom we should be remembering.
Here’s a SFGate story that seems confused with Veterans Day
No, no. The reason we have a Memorial Day is in its very definition. And that is to preserve the memories of our military veterans who answered the final call; paid the ultimate sacrifice and died so that others will live. Memorial Day should not be aligned with another story that takes away the meaning of this holy day.
The Daily KOS got it right
So, when you are out at picnic, with your family and friends, remember that this day is when we honor and remember our war dead that gave their all.
At dawn, flags should be raised briskly, then lowered slowly to half-staff. Then at noon, raised briskly to full-staff.
